CENTRAL LABORATORY

Anatomy

The Central Laboratory at Shri Ramkrishna Institute of Medical Sciences & Sanaka Hospitals is designed to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality diagnostic services across multiple specialties. Equipped with advanced automation and supported by trained professionals, the laboratory integrates modern technology with stringent quality standards to ensure reliable results for patient care and academic excellence.

Haematology Services

Haematology Services

The Haematology section is equipped with advanced automated systems for comprehensive blood analysis, including:

  • 5-Part Differential Haematology Analyzer for detailed complete blood counts
  • Coagulation Analyzer for PT, APTT, INR, fibrinogen, and other coagulation studies

These systems provide rapid, precise results essential for diagnosis, monitoring therapy, and emergency care.

Clinical Pathology Services

The Clinical Pathology section provides essential diagnostic support through comprehensive analysis of body fluids and routine laboratory investigations. The laboratory is equipped to perform:

  • Routine Urine Examination (physical, chemical, and microscopic analysis)
  • Stool Examination for parasitological and pathological evaluation
  • Body Fluid Analysis including pleural, ascitic, synovial, and cerebrospinal fluids
  • Peripheral Smear Examination and morphological assessment

All investigations are conducted under strict quality control protocols, ensuring accuracy, reproducibility, and timely reporting. The section plays a critical role in supporting clinical diagnosis, disease monitoring, and therapeutic decision-making across multiple specialties.

Clinical Biochemistry & Immunoassay Services

Clinical Biochemistry & Immunoassay Services

The Clinical Chemistry laboratory operates fully automated clinical chemistry analyzers capable of performing a wide spectrum of biochemical investigations, including metabolic panels, liver and renal function tests, lipid profiles, and enzyme assays.

Immunoassay platforms include:

  • Enzyme-Linked Fluorescent Assays (ELFA)
  • Chemiluminescence-Based Immunoassays (CLIA)

These technologies ensure high sensitivity and specificity for hormonal assays, tumor markers, infectious disease markers, and other specialized parameters.

Clinical Microbiology & Immunology Services

Clinical Microbiology & Immunology Services

The Microbiology laboratory functions within a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) facility and offers comprehensive diagnostic services including:

  • Automated Blood Culture Systems for rapid detection of bloodstream infections
  • Automated Identification and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (ID & AST) platforms for accurate pathogen identification and resistance profiling
  • Mycology Laboratory for fungal diagnostics
  • Immunology, Autoimmune, ANA and ANCA Diagnostic Section, including Immunofluorescence-based assays
  • Virology laboratory for routine and advanced viral diagnostic assays
  • Parasitology laboratory for identification of common and rare parasitic infections in clinical practice

The facility is supported by biosafety cabinets with dedicated exhaust systems, ensuring safe handling of infectious materials.

Molecular Biology & Advanced Diagnostics

Molecular Biology & Advanced Diagnostics

The dedicated Molecular Biology facility was the first of its kind in Paschim Bardhaman district, marking a significant milestone in regional diagnostic capability.

Designed with strict workflow controls to maintain diagnostic integrity, the laboratory features:

  • A Nucleic Acid Extraction Complex with Unidirectional Workflow
  • Automated Nucleic Acid Extractors
  • Robotic Pipetting Systems to minimize manual error
  • Real-Time Thermal Cyclers for molecular amplification and detection
  • Ultra-Deep Freezers for secure storage of specimens and reagents

During the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, the Molecular Laboratory played a critical public health role by testing approximately 2 lakh COVID-19 samples, serving seven districts of West Bengal and neighboring districts of Jharkhand. The facility significantly strengthened regional pandemic response capacity through high-throughput, reliable molecular diagnostics.

Histopathology Services

Histopathology Services

The Histopathology section is equipped with:

  • Automated Tissue Processors for standardized specimen preparation
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for targeted antigen detection

These services support accurate tissue-based diagnosis and academic research.

Commitment to Quality and Safety

All laboratory sections operate under strict quality control protocols, internal and external quality control programs, biosafety standards, and structured workflows. The integration of automation, biosafety infrastructure, and skilled personnel ensures reliability, reproducibility, and patient-centered diagnostic excellence.

The Central Laboratory stands as a vital pillar of clinical care, teaching, and research at Shri Ramkrishna Institute of Medical Sciences & Sanaka Hospitals — delivering precision diagnostics that support informed medical decision-making.
